    The color of your cover

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by deadrats, Mar 21, 2024.

I'm not exactly sure where to post this, but I am curious to hear from you guys on how you choose the color of your cover. I know self published authors design their own covers. Do trade published authors get some say? I imagine they do. So, have have you chosen the color of your book covers.

This is a bit of a spin off of a thread I started on book storage and organization. Personally, I've started color coding my collection. I've got books in pretty much every color, but white and blue covers seem to be the most popular. I don't have any purple book, and as @Homer Potvin mentioned purple covers for adult books is less seen. I don't think I have ever seen a purple book.

For the published novelists (self or trade), how did you choose the color of your cover)? Who usually does this in trade publishing? And is there any reason behind cover covers?

I recently picked up the novel So Lucky by Nicola Griffith. It's a paperback with an all black cover. I think it looks pretty cool, but I also think it's more rare to have a soft cover in black.

Is this stuff just all random? Or is there something else that goes into making this decision?
