What does human meat taste like?

Discussion in 'Research' started by deadrats, Jan 28, 2024.

If you were to barbecue some people what would the meat taste like? What would people think they were eating? And would it just smell like a barbecue while things were cooking? Thanks is advance if any of you have some of these answers.

Chicken apparently. I've run across that idea in many places. There's even a common phrase—"Tastes like chicken", used in cannibal movies and etc.

Do you know if it also would smell like chicken when it was cooking? I appreciate your knowledge of eating humans. ;)

Just last week, a colleague mentioned a Netflix account of the Uruguayan (I think) rugby players whose plane crashed in the Andes in the '80's. I can't remember if the new show is drama or documentary but do recall there was an older documentary a few decades ago. I also recall seeing one of the survivors speaking on a talk show and dealing with the difficult question of cannibalism for survival. There may be something in their experiences that answers your question.

Lol, that I don't know, sorry. But things do taste the way they smell. Basically, as I understand it, because we have taste buds in the nasal cavity. The only difference being they taste the air we inhale.

I've got to get rid of a body (in my story). ;) I'm dealing with some primitive characters who I think would be okay eating the body if seasoned right, of course.

Another thing to bear in mind, those that might know better, who could debunk your descriptions as misguided and ignorant ramblings, might have other reasons to stay quiet about it, if you know what I mean. Your cannibals can smell and taste chicken as much as you like, without worrying that anyone will expose you as a fraud.

The most common term I have heard of for people is "long pork". The tastes like chicken is an old joke.

I smelled really bad burns once after a tank accident in Germany. The ammo door was open and a hot shell casing hit a round in storage and it detonated. The loader had burns over 80% of his body. It smelled like pork on the bar-b-que. Sadly the loader didn't make it even after being airlifted to the burn unit in San Antonio.

Pork was the comparison I've come across a few times in my reading/watching of stories that mentioned cannibalism in some way. I've heard of human meat being referred to as "long pig," like bogart mentioned above. We're very similar to pigs in a lot of ways, and my understanding is that's why we are trying to use them for organ transplants and the like.

I've always heard pork, too. "Long pig" is supposedly a translation from a Pacific Island tribe that ate human flesh.

Even as I wrote that about chicken, something inside me was whispering "pork." I've also seen it called long pig (had forgotten about it).

You just went for the cliché that anything different tastes like chicken.

I was about to say the same, I smelled a guy who got set on fire by a Molotov cocktail during a riot once and it smelt like pork that had been on the BBQ too long.

Pork seems to be the most common comparison by those who know. The popular Mexican hominy soup pozole would in olden time be served with human flesh on special occasions. * Pork was adopted as a reasonable substitute. If it's good enough for the Aztecs it's good enough for me.

*There seems to be significant doubt as to the evidence for this practice but never let scholarly rigor and honesty get in the way of a cool anecdote.

I thought the Aztecs used to practice* human sacrifice? As in, "WE RIP THE BEATING HEARTS OF OUR ENEMIES!!!" type of thing?

Interesting coincidence as I watched a show about Alfred (or Alferd) Packer a couple of days ago.

No personal experience (Thank God) but I heard it described as similar to mild pork with a slight bitter iron aftertaste that you don't find in many commercial meats outside of maybe liver. There was a chef who (allegedly) bribed a med student friend to get him some to eat and he made a recipe to match the flavor that's still floating around on the internet. Hard to tell if it's the truth or just marketing though, anything to get an edge in haute cuisine.

It tastes delicious, especially with Béarnaise Sauce.

    (smiles)

Seriously, the consensus seems to be pork. It's alligator and iguana that tastes like chicken. And maybe snakes, although I haven't tried them.

Thinking about it there’s a substantial chance that it doesn’t taste like anything else. None of the other meats taste the same after all

it’s probably more similar to white meets like pork than it is to beef or lamb but it’s not likely to be exactly the same

it’s also likely to depend on the person, how old they are, and what their lifestyle was like… it’s likely that vegans taste better ( because other meats are tainted if the animal has been eating meat) and that young is less chewy than old

( unlike wookie which is chewie at any age :) )

it would also stand to reason that someone with a healthy lifestyle would taste better than someone with say substance abuse issues

lastly the taste probably varies from cut to cut and also depends on how the meat is treated or cured

I have a scene in one of my books where a cannibal serial killer tells a mob gunman that although he prefers females for freshness “ if you attempt to draw whatever weapons you have about your person , I will slice off your penis and fry it lightly in butter before enjoying the unique musky flavour”

Interesting. I can't think of any carnivores that are generally accepted as food aside from sharks. I've had shark steaks, and they were good. Maybe it's different if what they've been eating is mostly seafood? :D

Though I do understand that the difference between pigs and hogs is that hogs will eat meat. Or so I heard on a video yesterday. But I don't imagine they get ahold of much of it on the farms.

Pigs will eat more or less anything, a number of foot and mouth outbreaks have resulted from them being fed infected meat

also some people eat bear and other cultures eat dog.

Maybe what she meant is that hogs will actually kill something to eat it, whereas pigs will eat whatever they're fed. She was on a farm and petting pigs and hogs, and one of the hogs tried to bite her, which is what prompted her to say that. I think the way she put it was "The differecne is—hogs will eat you!"
