    Descriptive Writing Suggestions?

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Moony, Mar 27, 2015.

I've been scouring through Google trying to find novels with descriptive writing. I love this type of writing, but have only ever stumbled across it. For example David Clement Davies' The Sight has beautiful descriptive writing.

This is the first three lines of his book:

"In the beginning was a castle high on a craggy precipice. The air around it was so cold that it seemed that the sky itself would crack like ice. Night was beginning to fall around its walls and the great stone stairway which rose up and up towards the castle through the vaulting pines." (c) David Clement-Davies

Do you have any suggestions for books that write this way, paint a picture but also with a great story? Any helps is appreciated! :)

I can't get the picture of the aliens out of my head from the novel, Lilith's Brood. I'm savoring the image, wondering why it's made such an impact on me that I keep seeing this creature in my mind.

Seems fitting, since its first five words can be read in my avatar.

Maybe a story about a house?

If I'm perfectly honest, I don't know what you mean? I don't need ideas for my own descriptive writing, just books to read. :)

Some prose-rich authors I like - Angela Carter, Vladimir Nabokov, Francesca Lia Block, Francine Prose, John Steinbeck, Lygia Fagunda Telles, Margerite Young, Mervyn Peake, Karen Russell.

I clicked on the post to recommend Peake and Angela Carter, but others beat me to it.
