I'm looking for stories where a character discovers his belief is wrong or finds proof that his god doesn't exist or is evil. Particularly exploring how he reacts to it. I'm not specifically looking for "conversion to christianity" fics but I'll take them if they don't get too tracty. I don't mind self-plugs if they're allowed. Fanfiction is also fine. I'm not sure how long this could be a conversation about the subject itself without getting itchy.
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It's a bit of softer sci-fi, so don't roll your eyes too much at the improbable bits if you're a sci-fi fan, because they're not the point of the book. The MC, a Jesuit priest, finds himself on another planet where his own personal brush with the divine is followed by the destructive chill of learning that everything has two sides.
