I'm brand spanking new here. And I have a very important question. I'm tring to figure out a genre for a story. It seems to be eluding me. The story containes real evens, however the characters are all fictional. So far it could be Hisorical Fcition or just Biogrphical. I'm so confused! Thank a million. Alian xx
What do you mean by real events? Sounds like historical fiction, to be honest. It can't really be biographical when the characters aren't real. If you provided more details though, I could be more specific and certain.
The actual evens with in the story happened to a friend of mine so the characters aren't entierly fictional but change so not to be reconised. And aged a bit.
Oh, I see. Well in that case it wouldn't be historical fiction. I'd say it's true-story kind of thing, as changing characters to protect privacy is commonplace in these kind of stories. Can I ask why you need to know the genre?
Its part of one of my university pieces and i have to do an analysis on it. And the tutor has requested that i actually put something about the genre with in the essay. Most annoying if you ask me but then these tutors are very odd sometimes! Thank you so very much for you help!
i wouldn't say it's a 'true' story, since that label applies only to works that feature the real folks... here, since changes have been made to protect the innocent/guilty, it's fiction that's 'based on a true story'...
It's not necessarily historical fiction if the setting is modern-day. Then it's just 'fiction' fiction.
To take this in a slightly different direction, why is it important to categorize it? If you write it and it gets published, the publisher wil probably market it as the genre he thinks it will sell best in.
s/he may need to know so s/he can approach the appropriate venues, since they list the genres they handle......
But then why not submit to publishers of all genres it could fall under? Some of the most interesting works are those that don't fit neatly in a particyular classification.
