    Hello, Everyone.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by RileyKatherine, Jan 6, 2009.

    Hey everyone,

My name is Riley, and I'm fifteen years old. I attend Alberni District Secondary, and am in the tenth grade. I own two American Quarter Horse mares, both are registered. I've had Lily for four years, and I used to show her in AQHA shows, but she got tired of them so we bought Phoebe a couple months ago, and she's my new show horse.

I'm self-diagnosed OCD. I'm really anal about a lot of things... Some may call me a perfectionist, but I really wouldn't say that. I like things proper, but there are many things I don't keep in good condition. My room, for example. My mood depends on the cleanliness of my environment, and when my room is a mess, I feel like ****. But it's always dirty, because I'm lazy.

I hate hypocrites, but I am one, which is extremely hypocritical. Isn't it funny? Yeah, I truly thought it was. Grammar and Punctuation and Spelling are HUGE pet peeves for me - don't you just hate it when people mix up their "there/their/they're" ? I could whip a shoe at them. Same with "through/threw" and "to/too" ... I have literally been incapable of reading posts, stories and poems because of these mistakes.

I really like anime, but I'm not a huge anime junkie, yet another one of my semi-contradictions. I'm nuts for it, but I'm not a huge, huge fan. It makes sense though - I enjoy watching it but I'm not going to cosplay. I like Death Note, Elfen Lied, and of course Inu-Yasha.

My favourite books... Well, I flick between different authors, series, etcetera. Harry Potter is a classic series, and they'll always be my number one favourite, even if I don't touch one of them for a year. I - like many - have been afflicted with the Twilight Fever. I'm nuts for Twilight. I'm pretty much going through a vampire phase, actually, because I bought the Blue Bloods books, and fell in love with them, also...

My writing is really rather erratic, and I personally believe I need help on my sentence structures, but... My point is, when I have an idea, there's no reason for it. I may unknowingly be influenced by a book / movie / song, but I never have the same ideas twice. I can be inspired to write a love story, and then be inspired to write a story about something that could TOTALLY be an anime movie. I'm weird.

My pastimes include writing, drawing, riding, playing video games (anything Zelda, Final Fantasy, Harvest Moon, Guitar Hero) and playing instruments. I play the flute, recorder (HAHA), alto saxophone, trumpet, and am learning guitar and piano. I can't sing, but love music... MUSIC IS MY LOVER. Music gives me muse when nothing else does. Cures my writer's block. If you want to know what I listen to, feel free to ask me.

That's enough about me, although I could go on for days.

    Riles.

Hello Riley, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I'd recommend leaving your font size at the default. Your shrunken font is a bit headache-inducing.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
