Hello all, the name is Palooza. I am new to this site, which is obvious. I am an 18 year old male from New York. Next semester I will be a sophomore at the University at Albany. I am very pop culture induced (I watch a lot of TV, own over 200 DVDs and I am always reading a book.) My writing so far has been crime stories about drugs and violence. I have attempted to shy away from these types of stories, but I find myself having a difficult time finishing anything not related to that. The other night I sat in my room, bored. So I went over to my bookcase filled with DVDs and picked out Layer Cake. I sat and watched it and I couldn't help but have thoughts of a new story go through my mind the entire time. Before I put the movie in, I was on the verge of falling asleep in my bed (it was about 3 am, too), but now that the movie was on, I was pumped to write. I took my pencil and paper and wrote down characters, ideas, plots, etc and I had myself an idea for a new story. I began writing it and I hope to finish it soon for you all to read. Another thing: I suck at making titles for my stories. p.s. I feel like I'm missing something in here.. oh well, maybe I will think of it later.
Never seen Fight Club, loved the book. welcome! University of Albany, neat! I looked at colleges in New York (seriously considered Hamilton and Sarah Lawrence) but will be at Goucher in the fall. looking forward to reading your newest piece.
Hello Palooza, Welcome to the Writing Forums. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Thank you for the warm welcome. A place like this definitely has encouraged me to want to write and get things down on paper so people like me can review and help me out. Oh and I forgot to mention, after writing a children's book (complete with terrible illustrations!) for my creative writing class in high school, I have written several of those. My teacher went as far as to tell me to attempt to get those published first so it can open up doors to getting what I really want published, so we'll see where that goes. Imagine a children's book author turned novelist about gangsters and crime. A bit of a jump, haha. p.s. Fight Club is an awesome book and movie, both my favorites in each category. If you've never seen or read it, I suggest you get on it.
