    Hello everyone

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Aurica, Jan 6, 2008.

Hello to all of my fellow writing fanatics out there! I found this forum a couple of hours ago while looking for ways to enhance and improve my writing. Which I need a lot of! Just a huge heads up to anyone who reads this, I am horrible at anything related to grammar and punctuation. Commas are generally my main adversary. I'm not even sure if I used the right word there...

We're all pretty friendly and don't be shy about posting stuff regardless of your grammar, people will be sure to help you out if you need it.

Don't worry I'm sure the more you write the better your grammar will be. But remember we're here to help if you need it.

I know this totally defeats my saying that commas are my adversary but, shouldn't there be one in between worry and I'm?

    xD There should be.

But it's good for you to notice them even if they're your adversary. (I think enemy sounds better.)

Hello Aurica, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Commas are a gremlin many writers seem to have difficulty with. There are many different rules to keep track of, as well as a few situations where the presence or absence of a comma subtly changes the meaning. Perhaps an article or two may appear on the subject...

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well!

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    Welcome to the site! :)

    Subtle, but a good possibility.

Question: Did you deliberately miss that comma? There is NO way that enemy sounds better.:)

    =P Maybe...

Adversary sounds too... old? Old isn't the word I'm looking for, but it's the closest I can find.

Old? What's wrong with using older words? Besides. ancient is better.

I agree that old is better, but adversary sounds more like you're fighting against someone instead of a comma nagging at you because you forgot it.

Would an idiot have such a unique and appealing username as Aurica?

The answer is, of course, no.

Thank you. Appealing though? Besides I didn't think of it. It's from Ar Tonelico.

Most brothers always think that siblings are idiots.

    I think mine is =D

But I doubt that you're an idiot.

Well, thanks. You don't know how much math and science confuse me though. Some days the 50min classes feel like the longest in my life.

Well, thanks. Some days I feel like an idiot in algebra and science though. Like other people on subjects they loathe, despise, and with were never invented!

Haha, three variations of the same message and each one got bigger than the last.
