Hello there everyone. I'm RapidFire, not an especially original name, but it just seemed...right? It's not what I usually go by online, but this time, I think, I'll use it. I'm an Irish-German and I started writing a little over a year ago. I quit, several times, as I'm utterly convinced that I suck at it, but...I keep coming back to it, and I know for a fact that there are worse writers than myself. I have a very powerful imagination, to the point that it's a little unhealthy sometimes and I'm in desperate need of a hobby. I like writing. But I love writing horror. It's my passion. I love horror films, I love creepy books, I love tales of unexplained mystery but more than anything else I love the bone-chilling tale told by the orange glow of the fire, your only protection from the beasts of your imagination. But even your stalwart flame flickers, withdraws from the icy winds and horrors of the dark. What would do if it died? Light another or follow suit? But enough of that. I've had a few ideas, other genres that I haven't had the courage to attempt yet, and I'm in the middle of a huge project that stopped dead due to depression and lack of self-worth. I'd decided to abandon it, but only realized that I shouldn't as I typed this. Expect to see it here soon. Until then...I suppose I'll write short stories to try and hone whatever skill I may have. I'm RapidFire. I'm glad to meet you and I hope you'll all have me.
Hello RapidFire, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
As I am also new here I'd like to welcome you too...I wonder what # you are? How many more have actually joined the ranks since 18,900? Cog? Sorry...I tend to find my way down paths of tangents easily. I must say this....if the muse calls to you...abandonment is futile. It matters not how we feel about our skills...if we are born to write...then write we must and you my friend were born to. That is unmistakable. Personally...I'm not a horror kind of gal. I love a good thriller that will take me to the edge of my seat and then send me back into it with a good scare...I can do without the guts and gore though. Mom & dad never had to worry about paying for Med school...that's for sure. I do look forward to reading some of your writing though...I can tell that by the few sentences in your original post. Again...welcome. ~Bree
