I'm new here. Unlike a few other new people I perused, I am not a pre-existing writer. I'm pretty sure I took English in grade 10. I'm 25. What got me here was a lengthy and somewhat whiny discussion involving me and being bored combined with someone yesterday somewhat presumptuously asking me whether I thought I had a book in me. Well, what really got me here was Google and the words "creative writing forum". A little about me: I work full-time (somewhat menially) in a bookstore. People constantly tell me I speak obtusely. I play weiqi. My friend/personal trainer informs me I am currently "bulking up". I would like to be able to skilfully produce short stories and short poetry, but have no idea how; I'm here to learn. Also I am apparently verbose. I don't watch TV. What I'm gradually and alternately reading: Savage Anxieties - Robert A. Williams (Slowly. It's a little eye opening on a subject very removed from myself.) Lives of the Poets - John Newton (Somehow I pick this up, reread a part I've already read, put it down, and it never quite leaves my thoughts or gets finished) Mountains of Madness - HP Lovecraft (A little too dry for me to finish quickly, I guess) And Another Thing - Eoin Colfer (My kindle tells me I'm almost finished) The Games of Honinbo Shuei Volume 1 by John Fairbairn (Technical weiqi book) I have enjoyed: Everything I've read by Louis Carrol, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded included. Edgar Allan Poe, including his explanation of why The Raven is so great. Mark Twain CS Lewis (just my young self reading Chronicles of Narnia, Screwtape Letters, despite my own non-religiosity. Douglas Adams I am regretting buying: A Game of Thrones (really not my cup of tea).
Welcome to Writing Forums, Head! I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing. This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work. However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing. Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here. Banzai
Welcome to the site, Head Well there is certainly plenty of advice about writing poetry/short stories on here, so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I love the word 'verbose'...it always strikes me as being rather ironic, but that's why I love it. Enjoy your stay
