This book comes out in one week. I can hardly wait, especially after reading reviews from people who had advance copies of it. The overall opinion seems to be a total thumb's up. It's a mammoth book like The Stand with over a thousand pages and a ton of characters. And although the cover art is gorgeous, I can't help but be reminded of The Simpsons Movie. .
Yes, King definitely suffers from expulsive verbal diarrhea, which seems to be exacerbated by fame and advancing years.
It seems pretty interesting. King's last books weren't top notch in my opinion, maybe this one will change the trend.
Jesus, over a thousand pages? Given that King's ratio is at least 50% waffle to story, that's gonna be a lot of waffle...
Take into account that he claims to cut 20% of his first draft...this means that he chopped 200 pages from his original concept.
I will buy it. And by your comments, I am reminded of the old SNL skit making fun of King. He was writing during the entire "interview."
I havent picked u anything off his in years, but i have a feeling this one is going to be decent (is a srtory he had in his mind and started when he was much younger, thus prbably half decent) Im sure i read somewhere that his original first draft was like 1500 pages.
^ Me too, Speedy. I have a really good feeling about this one. Here's the publisher's description: This story's supposed to deal w/some of the issues dealt with in The Stand, only more allegorical. Needless to say, I am intrigued. I read that of the original story he wrote in the 80's, only the 1st chapter was kept for this novel. And if anyone's looking for a good deal, I found it online at Walmart for (U.S.) $8.98, and that includes shipping without any other purchases required. One sweeet deal.
Has anyone actually seen the book in bookstores? There is no blurb anywhere on the jacket describing what the book is about. Are ppl supposed to assume it's so awesome because it's written by King, that it doesn't need one?
In a word, yes. King is a celebrity writer, the book sells itself simply because it has his name on it.
No, seriously, in "on writing" he tells a lot of funny stories about the rejction letters he received, in one of these the publisher sent him a simple mathematic formula: second draft= first draft - 20% He wrote that since then it became law for him.
Some law. I suspect he is just that much freer to babble away in his initial draft. His final drafts could generally stand a reduction of quite a bit more than 20%, in my opinion.
What I said was a reference to something he wrote in On Writing. He refers to himself this way. I figured someone might catch that. I remember the passage you're referring to and I'm pretty sure he doesn't follow the formula he lays out. I suspect it's a general rule of thumb for good writing practices. He needs to take it up because I'm quite sure that he adds 20% or more in his final draft.
No spoiler, but i'll spolier tag it anyway (trust me it has nothing to do with the story) Spoiler But he name drops Stephenie Myer in it, and the way he did it made me laugh. King has the last laugh So far, only a third in. Should have it finished by tomorrow. The meds mean i cant read to much without getting tired. Doh!
The man needs to retire. Really. Someone more talented and gifted needs to take the helm of the horror genre, because it's a joke. Nothing is scary now. I want to be scared, again. Kings recent writing reminds me of R. L. Stine. Just After Sunset? What the fug is that? Those short stories are a disgrace to the horror genre. King's done. He's no more. He fell off. I'm going to read his next "masterpiece" at a local bookstore for free now.
Why do peole hsave to put horror and king together. He hasent done horror since the early 90's. Since than i9ts what you make it. Wose news King wise, is His writing another Dark Tower book. After conneting with Marvel i dont want to go back to it (even though the last three books were a work of fart i mean art. No i mean fart).
