    Wondering

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Targaddon, May 25, 2007.

I think this is a wonderful idea and was baffled that on a writing forum of all places no one seems to have bothered with this thread. I have to ask Why?

Together we could write a rather good story adding all our writing talents together and doing a story with many different styles and views.

Are you talking about the combined story that Hulls Raven started up in the novel section?

Well. Having just arrived here (Was it really just this week? Wow...), I hadn't really noticed that thread. Looking at it now, I had a thought of how I would have proceeded from HR's beginning, but not from the second offering.

I could see this as a persistent issue - authors may be inclined to branch off of different paths in the narrative instead of following a strict, whomever-gets-there-first approach.

What do others think? Would something like this work better if each contributor stated which installment he or she is resuming from, or will that just degenerate into chaos?

Not too sure really, I guess that could cause chaos, but I am unsure.
I have never really done anything like that before but I guess the idea of it is to continue off from where the last person left it.

Why not get a group of writers from here that want to contribute, give them all a random number and go in numerical order for who writes the next bit?

The project already seems to be in trouble though. I fear that drawing straws for the next section would be the last nail in the coffin. Good intentions aside, someone is bounf to drop the ball at some point.

My thought was if someone feels lukewarm about one installment and feels more inspiration from another offering, they may be more likely to keep it going.

Start a thread and see who is interested in this story making thingy. I think you can make a random number generator on MS Excel. Give everyone a number and put them in numerical order. This is the order in which you should post your section of the story.

If you feel you have no inspiration you can swap your number for someone who wants to write the bit that you don't...

If no one wantsto swap you can delay your turn until the end?

The problem with group stories as I've found on my own small forum is that they are very difficult to control.

    The story gets hijacked.

Someone writes in a new character and then never posts again.

There are huge difficulties in differing versions of the same story which can't be accounted for.

Characters rarely interact and if they do it's unbelievable more often than not.

What you need in my opinion if it is to work in any way, is an all powerful editor than can bring the pieces in to a cohesive and consistent effort - though this is a mammoth task.

I don't want to a put a dampner on your plans - just thought I'd share. Mostly though, good luck - because if you can pull it off then the result should be awesome.

Good point, Gannon. A dedicated editor would be a good idea.

The only problem I see with this is that only Mods can edit everyones posts and they already have pretty big jobs to do on the forum as it is.

Yes it can be true the task of Moderation for some is rather big.

Ok we can start from basics then like who'd be interested in adding to the story. And please only add if you wish to be involved.

    a possible why...
people who are serious about being writers are too busy writing their own original works, to waste time on those playing-around compendiums that go nowhere...

so, perhaps there are more serious writers here than dabblers?

    How so

As in are you saying its a bad idea or you just are not interested. Or you think its a waste of time.

I do recall though a few weeks back you were offering your services to edit this. unless in contained violence if memory serves me correct.

no, i'm not saying it's a bad idea at all, if that's what some want to do...

yes, i'm not interested in such things...

and no, i don't think it's a waste of time for those who want to do it...

'twasn't me... i do offer to edit individual people's work, but not joint things like what's being discussed here...

i wasn't putting a 'dampener' [sic] on anything, just offering a possible answer to a question that was asked... and this guy seems to have some need to diss me, for some reason... he certainly does it often enough, but i'm not going to waste any time on reciprocating...

It's a cool idea whether or not one person or a few people wants to say it isn't for them. Just do it. Don't focus on the negative input, just the positive.

You did in the thread joint story venture I posted in announcements. But it matters not really considering the joint story will no doubt have a considerable amount of violence.

Besides I think going with Alice In Wonderlands idea could work.

Well for what it is worth I think it is a great idea and I also think that Alice's suggestion may work.
The only way to find out is to give it a try.

I'd be interested in it. ^^

Some people might say they are interested and then not bother with it. Should we have a timelimit on how long you can wait before you post tyour section of the story? Say, 4 days?
