http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliospheric_current_sheet I've seen auroras spring up when there were no CMEs and no coronal holes that increase the solar wind and I always wondered where the heck they came from. I'd never heard of this twisting solar wind before but I think it may have explained at least some of those unusual auroras. From http://spaceweather.com/ today:
