Does anyone know of a decent OCR software for hand writing?

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Rorschach's Inkwell, Feb 27, 2023.

Due to the type of work I do, I've been doing a lot of hand writing.

This means, though, that I need to spend time typing when I could be writing, find someone to type for me (not easy), or find some OCR software.

I'm hoping someone knows a good program for the latter? Hopefully one that can be trained, but that is not a requirement- my handwriting is only maybe half-decent, so I don't mind having to go in and correct stuff.

You might consider reading it aloud (dictating to the computer) and using speech-to-text software. When I've tried that though there were so many corrections needed it would have been easier to just type it up. More expensive software might have made a big difference. I was using whatever was already pre-installed on my computer.

There are some options for iPad, if you don't mind writing on that. If you're talking about software you can use with a scanner, to feed in handwritten sheets, there is an iOS app called "Pen to Print" that is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't used it myself.

Hey i've actually been thinking of this, wouldn't it save up some time if there actually was a tool for that?

If you have an Apple Pencil you can write in many applications on an iPad.

Handwriting recognition on my ipad for me is 100%, but it wouldn't have been a year ago.

If your handwriting is as bad as mine was and you'd like to rehab it, don't give up hope. Buy a fountain pen for $15. A Jinhao X159 is a good choice. A bottle of ink will cost another $20. I spent about 20 minutes practicing handwriting elements like loops and curves, then I spent about 20 minutes for a week or so practicing longhand. At least it worked for me.

The other thing that's cool about the Pencil is photo masking. I open Affinity Photo on my iMac, connect my iPad in sidecar mode, and I can easily do very accurate photo masking.

Sadly, Apple Pencils are out of the question for me. I work retail, and while I can generally get away with a notebook, an ipad is not something you can get management to ignore.

Besides, I don't do Apple anymore. Not for a long time.

You might want to have a look at Free OCR at http://www.paperfile.net/

Never used it for handwriting though. Well designed interface and it is free so you could try it out.
