    Anime Recommendations

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by Charisma, Jul 29, 2014.

Ohhai. Here's to watching my fifth anime (unless you count ATLA and TLOK as anime, in which case my seventh).

Can someone recommend something along the lines of Code Geass? I guess I have seen this question almost everywhere with no satisfactory answer. But you guys being writers and all may understand better when I explain what I like in CG and seek elsewhere.

I liked CG because of the complexity of plot, interplay with numerous characters, moral dilemmas, and strategic planning. I do not care for mechas, romance, or whatever else that defines CG. Anything along the lines of that, or something you think would complement my taste, would help.

If it helps, Death Note is my other favorite anime besides CG, but if I must nitpick, I'd say Death Note got quite redundant in the second season. I was with Light till the very end and it seemed the show had somehow compromised to make him the bad guy who loses. Which was boring and cliched. Elfen Lied was okay, too depressing. I started watching Darker than Black but stopped when I found out it was not being completed--it was interesting but seemed largely unexplored and pretty vague.

Suggestions much appreciated--after all, as I near the end of my tenth re-watch of CG, I want to have something to relapse to.

No wonder you didn't like Death Note, you watched the anime rather than read the manga. Most adapted animes are terrible and take huge liberties. I mean Fullmetal Alchemist had like one or two seasons for a series that spans nearly 100 books.... Let me tell you, none of the characters were the characters or had anything to resolve... Same goes for Bleach.

Try to watch Anime's that are not adapted from manga's as generally they'll be bad. Currently watching No game no life and I find that its staying true to the books but it's not really the genre you requested.

Perhaps. But then, I can't find much of anything with either distinction :p You're right, I don't think it's my type. I've watched the first two episodes of Eureka 7 but it seems to be utterly boring at this point.

I'm not that much of an anime watcher, but I've heard Attack on Titan is supposed to be pretty good.

Thanks @Link the Writer, I'll look into it. I've started watching Eden of the East, though, and it seems to be pretty good. Especially the animation.

Granted there hasn't been much new response, thought I'd update the lurkers :D So I finished Eden of the East (yep, in a single day). Wasn't as amazing as its premise, tbh. Now I'm watching Steins;Gate. Now that is some crazy amazing stuff! I have had to stop myself from marathon-ing, forcing myself to stop at Episode 15 for now (I watched 12 episodes today XD). Let's hope it lives up to its expectations.

    Anime kinda like Code Geass...

Money and Soul was kinda ideologically based although it was only 11 episodes and felt rushed.

    At the moment I'm watching
    Shin Sekai Yori (Beautiful)
    Neon Evangellion
    Zankyouno Terror (Highly recommend)
    Fate/Stay Night

and I've always adored Monster for something different, although at 74 episodes it's a shade long yet at the same time utterly brilliant. It can take a while to build, but once it does it just is an amazing series in its own right.

Valvrave was kinda like Code Geass on steroids, that show was bat**** crazy

While not along the lines of CG I suggest Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood if you have not watched it already. For newer releases, Chrome Shelled Regios, or if you like older anime Magical Knight Rayearth.

My friend who knows fully well I am very dismissive of anime has lent me the full Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood on DVD. I have to say, it's quite good. What I like is how the two protagonists have a problem that is interesting, and really informs their character; and there is a lot going on between the two Elric brothers that I've really been appreciating. Sure some of the finer plot details don't make a lot of sense to me, but still, it's good!

I've seen a few anime before this, Cowboy Bebop I really really liked, Bleach I've been watching and liked it at first but it's getting a bit ridiculous. I'm still pretty dismissive of anime as a genre of fiction - but I'm utterly dismissive of comic books too, so I guess I'm starting to turn on anime. I've heard anime can get very silly and childish at times, and you just have to ignore those moments, and that is not wrong at all.

im not going to lie, Death Note was better as a manga, i started watching the anime, but it didnt feel right against the books (which i have the black edition volumes, which are amazing.)

personally i prefer bleach as an anime rather than the manga, the only arc that spoils it is the Bount arc, which i know doesnt appear in the books (Tite hadn't published any more at this point, so they had to improvise, which lead to a less-than-good storyline)

a lot of people kept recommending One Piece to me, i watched half of the first episode and turned it off, because i found it a bit childish in comparison to Death Note and Bleach

I have a friend who swears by One Piece, says of the big three it's by far the best. I've only watched one random episode and I guess I agree with you for now, but I've not given it a fair viewing.

The friend who has lent me FMA Brotherhood also adores Death Note and Naruto, which he tried to get me in to. I hated every moment of Naruto, but Death Note seems decent enough.

as i say, the manga of Death note (imo, i watched 12 of the 20 episodes of Death note i found) is better than the anime. it may be that, like some books, the translation of it onto the screen isnt as well portrayed as it could be...

For me One Piece, is within the lines of a silly anime (apologies if I offend anyone, but it's simply personal preference.) I won't watch Bleach or Naruto for the same reason. I think like most things anime can be aimed at particular audiences it's just a matter of searching for the right television show or movie.

I haven't watched or read Death Note or Code Geass and I'm generally not very well versed in anime, but I've watched a few I considered pretty good (as a non-genre fan) and a bunch that were either average or pretty bad, but I can share the ones I liked in case they'd be close to the mark:

-It's not futuristic, and I know folks talk about the manga, saying it's better, but I really enjoyed Claymore. It's one of the few shows that were honestly captivating and didn't have an MC so over-powered, she never gets hurt. It's just too bad they ended the anime well before its time.
-Noir was pretty cool (and like Claymore, has an amazing soundtrack), being one of the very, very few anime where the handling of firearms bears any semblance to how it's done in real life (taking into consideratione.g. limited magazine capacity, weapons maintenance etc). Sure, Kirika's abilities are nowhere near realism, but let's say that compared to other similar anime, Noir is at least borderline realistic at times.
-Neon Genesis Evangelion was pretty good, albeit among one of the more depressing pieces I've seen. Sure, the quality of animation dips about halfway through or so (I think they had budget issues or something), but if you can look past that, it can be an enjoyable sci-fi romp.
-Wolf Brigade started out great but then turned boring about halfway through, but some like it, so it's worth a look. The first half is amazing though; if they'd just kept it up all the way to the end.
-Cowboy Bebop was awesome. I expected to hate it 'cause I'd seen stills and thought the MC looked annoying, but the show was so good, it totally won me over and now I consider it one of the best I've seen, maybe the best sci-fi anime I've watched unless that title goes to...
-Planetes. It's a very realistic sci-fi anime that's very different from Bebop, so it's difficult to say which is better; the apple or the orange. But if you like spacy stuff, you owe it to yourself to check out both.
-Another film that's very different but still imho vastly better than Wolf Brigade: Metropolis. That one was truly amazing as far as sci-fi goes. It has a really cool, kinda dark-ish atmosphere without being overly gloomy, partly thanks to the endearing characters.
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was pretty good although here and there I felt they wasted some of that great potential. The movie was good too, of course. I haven't seen the OVA.
-Texhnolyze was pretty good as far as depressing, dystopian anime goes, and it had a rellatively realistic feel (well, "realistic" being a pretty fluid concept when it comes to anime.
-If you like off-kilter weirdness and anything bizarre, Excel Saga is an option and it has a great theme song too. I like the self-depricating humor and how the show pokes fun at anime clichés.

Those came to mind right now, but I'm sure there are at least a few others I can't remember at the moment.

I forgot about Ghost in the Shell. The film version of it was good, but wasn't as good as people had said, or I was expecting/hoping to be honest.

That applies to so many shows, films, novels etc; tons of potential, but lacking execution.

After finishing watching FMA Brotherhood, I have to say I quite like it. It's a rare anime I can say I like, but I like that one.

Umm. Well. It's a movie, some 70 minutes long. It's on Youtube. It's a bit surreal. It's analytically interesting. It may not be fun to watch, though. I'd classify it as worth it. That's all I got, without skewing things. Let me know if you watch it.

Glad that you enjoyed FMA Brotherhood. If you're still looking for things to watch another wonderful anime is the film From Up On Poppy Hill.

I've just finished watching Death Note. I hear that's popular, and hear it's very marmite, you either love it or hate it with all your soul. Honestly, it's not awful. It's like a puppy in many ways: it's not without merit, and it's very pleased with itself, and sure the story gets a bit silly near the end (who the hell really likes Near?) but it means well enough that you find mind it if it leaves you a foul-smelling present on the front door step. As it sometimes does. But it's also not ... good.

There, I said it, Death Note is just mediocre.
