    Gracious in defeat

Discussion in 'Word games' started by assassins creed, Jul 17, 2008.

I am trying to create a poem using the above title. I am looking for ideas in relation to characters/personalities who are good losers (if you wish to put it that way) in love and remain good friends with the lovers that rejected their proposals of marriage etc.:)

Dude, move this to a different area like general writing.

    a). You'll reciever more answers

b). This area is purely reserved for reviewing poetry.

It's a quick fix and no I'm not being mean.

I have moved this thread to 'General Writing' as it is the correct place to post such a question, rather than the review room.

You will find you will get better response to this question here.

    Thank you.

I am sorry, Assasins Creed, but I do not think that it is wise to try and write a poem based around a title. You need to have an actual idea about what you want to write about, some of the lines maybe planned, something to work from.

Why would you ask others for a poem theme? That is the role of the author...and it looks like you may have already answered your own question.

"...good losers (if you wish to put it that way) in love and remain good friends with the lovers that rejected their proposals of marriage..."

    Now, write about it.

Hello Steve, Thank you for pointing that out to me

Torana, I would also like to thank you for rerouting it to the general writing forum

Heather Louise, I appreciate your comments, I have a general idea of what way I want to go about it and will try to develop it from the theme as suggested by NaCI

NaCI your comments are also appreciated and you are right in what you said. I have already answered my own question just by asking it.

Again thank you all for your replies.

try using your imagination or even use a situation where you yourself have been spurned by love. Then use those feelings that welled up inside of you to create the answers you were looking for.

Heather, I dis-agree with you on this one.

I, myself, tend to write poems around a title. I will sit down and come up with a title for a poem and then write a piece. I have done it on many occassions and the piece has turned out wonderfully. Like my poem titled "Painted Illusions". The title for that piece came before the poem. It was after that, I managed to come up with the contents for the poem. Same with "Edan's Garden of Death", "When the Macabre Drift", and many other pieces I have written.

I don't think that it truly matters where you start out with a piece, by having one word, one line, a title, an ending, a image... a poem has to start somewhere, and anywhere is a good place to start.

We all have different techniques when it comes to writing, so never say that you can't do something a certain way, because there will be someone to stand up and say "Sorry, but I dis-agree, it is possible and it isn't wrong."

Are you familiar with the song, "Anything You Can Do?" It was composed by Irving Berlin for the 1946 Broadway musical, Annie Get Your Gun. The song is a spirited duet, with one male singer and one female singer. Each person tries to out-do each other with increasingly complicated tasks.

    Anything you can do,
    I can do better.
    I can do anything
    Better than you.

    No, you can't.
Yes, I can. No, you can't.
Yes, I can. No, you can't.
    Yes, I can,
    Yes, I can!

    Anything you can be
    I can be greater.
    Sooner or later,
    I'm greater than you.

No, you're not. Yes, I am.
No, you're not. Yes, I am.
No, you're NOT!. Yes, I am.
    Yes, I am!

    And only on that?
    Yes.
    So can a rat!
    Any note you can reach
    I can go higher.
    I can sing anything
    Higher than you.

    Yes, I CAN! (Highest)

    I can buy cheaper.
    I can buy anything

    Yes, I can,
    Yes, I can!
    Anything you can say
    I can say softer.
    I can say anything
    Softer than you.
    No, you can't. (Softly)
Yes, I can. (Softer) No, you can't. (Softer)
Yes, I can. (Softer) No, you can't. (Softer)

chef dave thanks for your "anything I can do, you can do better" reply!

I really liked that song. The words to it also are very inspirational which gets your creative juices flowing... which is what I think you were trying to say to me. All the same in the same fun way I will use MEATLOAFS phrase:
"I would do anything for love, but I won't do that" as this also gives the same inspiration because it makes you ask the question:

What won't you do? while thinking of this it makes you use your creativity to come up with the illusive answer to "I won't do that"

Thanks all the same chef dave

Well, I once had a huge crush on this guy, and he became engaged to and later married one of my best friends. I hope I was gracious in defeat. :) Never actually told either of them how I felt anyway. There's your real life example.

As far as more historical figures goes, I can't think of anyone who's legendary for being gracious in defeat. Fictionally, the bad guy usually dies at the end so we don't get a chance to find out whether he was a gracious loser or not. Sorry none of that's very helpful. Lol.

Paranormalwriter, Like yourself having a crush on someone, only for them to marry one of your friends I went through something similar.

My old girlfriend Amanda, whom I went out with for two years, told me that she wanted to break it off with me. When I asked her why she told me that she was no longer attracted to me and that she was seeing someone else.

The jealous demon inside me decided to show himself. He demanded to know who this person was as he was not happy he stole his girlfriend. Before she came out with this shocking news, I was about to ask her would she be my wife.

Was I glad I allowed her to speak first, as she saved me from making a fool of myself. When she continued to talk about who she was seeing, I told her I didn't want to hear anymore. She said she had to tell me to my face, that she didn't leave me for another man. No! It was another woman.

She said she had been struggling for some time with her sexuality, not knowing which side she was batting for. Well she finally found out that she preferred women to men. I didn't know how to cope with this information and chose not to respond to her questions.

I just told her I had to go. I had to allow this information sink in and I thought It better to be away from her, In case I did something stupid. I didn't see her for two weeks, until I felt I could speak to her rationally.

While we were discussing our future in a near bye cafe, her girlfriend came by. When I saw her girlfriend, I was taken aback. She was beautiful. My response to Amanda was to say she knows how to pick them.

I told Amanda I will always love her and be there for her if she needed me. Jokingly but being serious at the same time, I turned to her girlfriend and said I would love to shack up with them both. She just laughed and said if she was bisexual and not lesbian, she would oblige me.

With this I turned around to Amanda. I told her I hope she and her girlfriend has a wonderful time together. Although I lost her to another, what I wanted most of all was for her to be happy. I said I wanted us to still be friends and hoped that we could still go to the movies together, the three of us to show her that there was no hard feelings.

Although I have to say that this was a lie, as I still yearned for her. I did not want to say this to her as I was afraid she would no longer want to be friends with me. So the best thing was for me to let her go. To have her (even as
a friend) meant the world to me. As I would still be able to go around to their place and say hello, and enjoy their company. although not as partner in the relationship.

It took me the best part of a year to finally let her out of my life. when I saw how happy Rebecca and she were together, I decided to go on the dating trail again. When I said this to them, they decided to help me. Rebecca said her older sister Samantha (by two years) was single and also on the dating scene. She said she would hook me up with her and did so.

Her sister Samantha and I went out together for eight months and they were the happiest months of my life. Unfortunately I lost Samantha too. No not to love, but to cancer.

Samantha had been struggling with pains in her stomach for the past three months of our relationship. She wouldn't take my advice or that of her sisters to go to the hospital to get it checked out. After suffering with intense abdominal pain one afternoon while we were out shopping together, she collapsed on the street. I immediately got a shop assistant to phone for an ambulance.

When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, I was told to wait outside for a few minutes while they assessed her condition. They were doing all sorts of test on her, but could find nothing wrong with her. One of the doctors decided to call in a specialist to see if he could find out what the problem was.

This specialist was doing all kinds of examinations on her, he eventually found out that she was suffering from cancer of the stomach.

While all these tests where taking place, I made a phone call to Rebecca. I told Rebecca to come to the hospital straight away. Rebecca, Amanda and I were by Samantha's bedside when the doctor came back with the news.

I asked him was it curable and he said no. I then asked him how long did she have left and he said 48 hours or less. He said had she gone to the hospital sooner there might have been a chance of saving her then. But as its gone too far theres nothing anyone can do for her. even if they tried to operate it would be futile.

It may seem I have gone off the point a little bit, but you would be wrong. As I have not only lost to love, but to the big C you get where I am coming from. I had two situations within my life where I had to struggle to be gracious in defeat. It was bad enough the first time around losing out to another woman, but losing another one, this time to Cancer was the toughest body blow I received in my entire life.:(

how did your ex-girlfriends girlfriend get you hooked up with her sister. Did the whole relationship not feel weird to you.

How did her sister feel about going out with her own sister girlfriend, the one she effectively stole from you, hence the lost to love bit?

Her sister was free and decided to go on the dating trail. When Rebecca mentioned me to her sister Samantha, she initially said she will go out on one date with me and see how things go. That date was the start of a beautiful relationship. Aside from her looks (she was beautiful) she was very intelligent, had a lovely smile and she had a wonderful sense of humour. She could have a successful career as a stand up comedian, she was that funny.
