Say you live outside. You have a campfire to cook over. You build one of these things..... what is the correct name for it? and whats the name for the alternate version?
I would call the first one a spit - I know that a spit is something you turn to cook evenly, but same sort of construction?
The second one is one form of a 'camp cooking crane' according to Wikipedia but I can't nail down a source on that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outdoor_cooking I think Hammer's right about spit. The definition of barbeque from MW gives some hints (note that it specifies revolving spit: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/barbeque High bar with forks according this dude, but that could literally be his own term: https://onlinecaveman.com/wilderness-skills/how-to-suspend-your-pot-over-a-camp-fire/#:~:text=Simple stick&text=Another quick way to cook, your cooking before that happens. It's weirdly hard to find an explicit answer about these simple things. I might be tempted to just describe the setup in prose... Edit: oh wait, oxford also has this definition for spit, which seems to be particular about a thin rod running through the meat:
I found a site that's not HTTPS so visit at your own risk, but it's also calling it a lug pole. http://www.inquiry.net/outdoor/skills/fire/2_cooking_fires.htm
