Hello and welcome to the roleplay! Here is where we can discuss plot/character creation and general notes about this roleplay. The premise of this story is simple, in a world where magic and science exist, there is a small tavern where people of all classes gather. But the world outside is becoming more dangerous as the mages are becoming weary and ill. It is only a matter of time before magic disappears and the scientists of the world are trying to unravel its mysteries for the sake of all. For more details, please see the Lore thread. And unlike other roleplays, each person will write 500-700 words of the story using all characters. Like a round-robin writing exercise. In this story, everyone will be creating the lore and world outside the tavern. To discuss, please use the 'lore' thread. To create a character, please fill out the following and wait for approval. Also, follow all forum rules. And I as the Game Master, will play the barkeep along with 1 other player character who can leave and join adventures. Also know I can change/add rules I find reasonable to maintain harmony and fairness. Classes: The Mage/Scientist Class: the highest class of society. Those who know magic specialize in Earth, Fire, Air, or Water Magic (see Lore Thread). Those who cannot use magic, are scientists who are held in high esteem for their research. The Poet Class: the artists and merchant class. They keep society running and entertained. Farmers are considered Poets and so are workers of all kinds. The Lab Rat Class: Lab rats: lowest class- the outcasts and criminals of society who are used in scientific experiments. Some here have been wronged by the legal system and are sure there is a way out. Name: Sex: Social Class: Age in human years (must be 18): A brief description of appearance: (no pictures, please.) Other notes:
New question: Do we actually want to make this more of an improv/collective 'novel'? So instead of EACH playing a character, we each write 500-700 words with ALL characters, but have to adhere to what their creators made? Just a thought, since there is so much fun lore being made.
I very much like the idea that each entry into the story include any/all characters. I think having to stick to only our character stalled our first role play.
Agreed. I think having a word limit of 500-700 words each is fair. Enough to add material, but not dominate the story. I do think writing one characters did stall out the other one. This way, people can jump in and out of a story easier.
I like this idea. I'm onboard if you want to do it this way. This is actually shaping into something rather interesting.
Then, let's do it this way. I will make another thread for Character Index. A place where information is kept and updated about each character.
I am thinking of how this will work. I believe it will be in turns that we post. So I don't post twice and have to pass it to the next person. You three can chose who goes first, and I will go last. Any person added after the story begins, goes after me.
So, do we want to come up with characters? I would say start with 1 each and then when you write a piece, add characters as needed. I like to start small and slowly grow a story.
I think that's good. I was thinking we agree on who writes the next segment as we go but a system is probably better. We can start doing that I think. I'll post mine soon. But I gotta think about it first.
Also, since a lot has changed since the original post of this thread (it still says DnD on it), the character sheet might need to be updated.
I don't think we will. I'm sure someone will come up with an interesting scientist character that has lots to offer to the story.
Are we set in medieval times? Because of course they would not be called scientists, but natural philosophers. So can we recap with the choices for social class?
We can change the time era if you want. But I do like the setting. We could change the name to Natural Philosophers. Yes, we can recap. Let me post an update to the top thread.
@Louanne Learning @ps102 @Delusionist I updated the main post with the story and classes. Please go take a look.
I've got two observations: Fist: The scientist class seems to be limited. Can scientist only do math? Second: Do mages that still haven't quite mastered magic yet (i.e. are learners or something) still fall under the mage class? I'm thinking a little broadly here so this one may not be relevant.
You're right, I changed that. As for mages, I don't want to to be TOO confusing. So maybe, Apprentice mages, Mage and Sage for the highest level.
So, once we have our character figured out, we post it in the other thread - in the Character Index thread?
Here's what I have: Name: Katara Sex: Female Social Class: Poet – Katara, together with her mother, Dusca, and her grandfather, Bossman, own and run the Tavern. They come from a long line of poets. Age in human years (must be 18): 25 A brief description of appearance: (no pictures, please.) – Medium height and slender build, dark hair and eyes, which are always observing. Katara does not often smile, but when she does, it’s genuine and bright. Other notes: Katara’s father was a scientist named Barnabas who seduced and then abandoned Katara’s mother. Katara has been raised in the Poet tradition, but the strain of reason pulls on her. She is devoted to her mother and would never let on about the curiosity she has about her father. Her grandfather dotes on her.
Name: Olive Sex: Female Social Class: Mage Age in human years: 24 A brief description of appearance: Olive-green eyes and hair, which is tied to a pony-tail. Average height and body build. She usually wears cyan-colored clothes. Other notes: Olive doesn't know who she is. The only thing she knows is that, five years ago, a thief violently robbed her of all she had and left her to die in an alley. She was found with severe head injuries, which she did recover from, but with amnesia as a result. Olive's initial search for her own identity was negative. Nobody seemed to know who she was, and nobody seemed to look for her. She then learned from a local that she spotted her getting down from one of the ships in the town's port along with many travelers recently. So she traveled from somewhere, which explained why nobody recognized her. She was a foreigner of unknown origin. Since then, Olive has been traveling around the country. Her water-type magic (composed from Hydrogen and Oxygen) is what she uses to fund her search for answers. Though she is far from amazing or notable at it. [Let me know if these are too many notes and I can trim down what details aren't needed]
