Authors deemed « too attractive »?

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by thelonelyauthor, Nov 20, 2024.

    Hello everyone!

Can anyone on this sub recall a known case of a writer who had his or her career hindered by their « attractive physique » either by having the public or the critics refusing to take them seriously or by having their publishers refusing to publish their photos to the press out of fear that they might become associated with an attractive antagoniste ( even though the author and the antagoniste don’t look alike).

    Thanks for any info!

Really, not a single example since Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1453? Lol

Already read it, but these authors were not « hurt » because of their beauty though…

Oh, so THAT'S why my writing keeps getting rejected. I knew there had to be a reason.

By the way - this (and the other place you posted this) aren't subs, and I think most forums would be a little bit miffed at being referred to as subreddits. Forums came long before reddit did.

I doubt it. There might be a career field somewhere being attractive is a deterrent, but I can't imagine it happens often.

What's the antagonist have to with it?

Both the antagonist and the author would be considered attractive (but in different ways lol)! Therefor possibly creating an association

A writer hindered from success by a physique so magnificent that photos of the same are verboten by the publisher?

    Seriously?

Mitigate the devastating beauty by doing the publicity head shot five minutes after the writer finishes cleaning the bathroom. For personal appearances, dress the heavenly body in clothing designed for concealment.

Georgia Bonesteel once had a dustcover photo in which she wore sunglasses and half hid behind a tree. It was my all time favorite publicity photo.

Now I remember you. You asked about a character who looked like Adam Levine and spoke 8 languages and was an author in three other threads over the last 6 years. Here's my response from the last time.

Should I bother asking again what your point with any of this is?

The writer being affected is the OP, in his own book, apparently - even though the antagonist is "nothing like him". I'm not sure how all this factors in.

Homer, you are so smart. This is why you're paid the big bucks to patrol the site.

(Goes off to google Adam Levine, whoevah he was.)

Sexiest Man Alive at one point, as bestowed by People Magazine (I think they're the ones who do that).

Are you! I hadn't heard, but have absolutely no doubt that you deserve the title.

Oh, wait. You mean that Adam guy? Phht. Faces like his are a dime a dozen. Give me a man who can cook to win the title of Sexiest Man Alive every time.

What makes you think it directly relates to me, it’s called fiction for a reason…

Mine was on a much smaller scale!

Not sure about yourself but I find the challenges of running food business is very much like writing. There are so many processes that needs to be looked at for the 'finished' product even reaches a customer.

Quality of ingredients, stock control, prep are just a few steps that I don't think a person needs to know, but that it has to become second nature. This really became apparent when I first started writing and many writers advised that people should write everyday or have a routine etc... and this made a lot more sense as the years rolled by. I've stopped for short periods and you do lose that 'touch' with writing, in that not everything flows as well and you have to 'work' a little harder to get back into the rhythm.

Nice to be chatting with you Chef!

And sorry this thread has deviated from the OP. I haven't come across any examples of a writer being too attractive that it distracts from their writing. I would say that this maybe a back handed compliment to the writer, but a fierce PC reply in saying their manuscript is subpar and a not so subtle hint of 'do not disturb me again' message.

Noticed how I said « would not publish the picture of the author » not « would not publish manuscript ». A situation where the book would come out but the press would not know what the writer looks like…

Being attractive is generally an asset in life

That aside as homey said this has been asked and answered several times already, the character as suggested is essentially a Mary Sue, by being too good looking, too gifted, too perfect, to be believable... you're not going to get a different answer by asking it all over again

Well, I said: Are you concerned that this is something that could happen to you?
Then you said: If I said that this was the case would you believe it ?
I said: I can certainly believe that you are concerned that you might be affected, yes.
And you said: But I must if there is any historical precedent to this! Lol
Me: So far, no one across two forums can come up with one. But who knows, there might be one that hasn't been publicised, but then we wouldn't know about it.
You: I think therefor I have a « historical first » on my hands LOL

I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to read into that.

I can't wait for the details you promised.
