LocalScriptMan videos

  1. I already posted several of his videos on the topic of Character Web, but he frequently puts out great videos I want to collect where I can quickly find them. So here's a place to do that, no particular topic.

What if Character Sheets weren't awful?
He says he used to talk about theme (he sure did, it was all over his character web videos), but now he's moving away from that. It seems like he's working up his concepts into some kind of grand overarching narrative, a sort of universal understanding of how it all works. I hope that doesn't screw his stuff all up. Well, if it does, at least we still have the early videos. I'll go through his backlog and drop whatever videos really appeal to me here in a bit.

    New one:

Looks like he agrees with me about Truby. I was blown away by his ideas on Character Web but pretty underwhelmed by the rest of it, and puzzled about his irrational hatred for Three Act Structure. His Seven Act is just a modification of it, while he pretends it's some kind of radical departure. Actually I'm doing this entirely from my very faulty memory, many years after the fact (it was back around 2006 or so when I read it, so, like almost two decades). I think I have as much in common with this guy as I do with Leiber. Now if I can just get somewhere near as good as them...

Hmm. Inner core beliefs to give characters reasons for doing things. Nice concept. It's like giving them an inner life or inner world, and if somebody lacks that they're like empty, soulless characters, only reacting to events that happen around them, with no inner motives of their own. You can't feel the dominoes falling into place inside them when they make decisions. All the dominoes are outside of them. Yeah, I guess that's how you're supposed to do minor characters, not major ones.

On how a child's arc differs from an adult's.
