After reading through the article I got a bit if a scare tactic marketing vibe from it. The issue itself is worth checking into just for the CYA aspect for anyone self publishing, but how much of a danger is it really when the only reference to this being a legal issue was Harry Potter? That kind of strikes me as some lawyer trying to find a way to cash in with an obscure bit of legal code.
I had no idea. I hope I will remember this for when it is time to publish. I wonder how many self-publishers are aware?
If you use a reputable formatting package like vellum or atticus everything in there will be licenced for the purpose you are using it for it’s more likely to be an issue in cover design but tbh even that’s not all that likely
