Font Copyright Laws for Books: Your Print Book Could be in Violation

"Did you know that just because a font came with your computer or Word doesn’t mean you can use it in your physical print book?

Some fonts, while free to use personally or in other electronic forms, have extra requirements or copyright rules if you are to put it on a physical product…like a book.

That means that if an author isn’t careful, they could choose a font from their Word or other writing software, like Times New Roman, that isn’t legally allowed to be put in a print product without an extra paid license

So sneaky. They shouldn't be allowed to do that unless it's made clear to anyone who uses it.

Seriously? Now I have to choose a font that's both copyright free and fits with the characters.

After reading through the article I got a bit if a scare tactic marketing vibe from it. The issue itself is worth checking into just for the CYA aspect for anyone self publishing, but how much of a danger is it really when the only reference to this being a legal issue was Harry Potter? That kind of strikes me as some lawyer trying to find a way to cash in with an obscure bit of legal code.

I had no idea. I hope I will remember this for when it is time to publish. I wonder how many self-publishers are aware?

If you use a reputable formatting package like vellum or atticus everything in there will be licenced for the purpose you are using it for

it’s more likely to be an issue in cover design but tbh even that’s not all that likely
