I write as an escape from reality, and what better genre to find freedom in than one where anything is possible. Sometimes my stories reflect the very issues I have personally. Sometimes I feel weak and vulnerable, but the characters in fantasy stories can overcome that and be powerful and hopeful.

Hi, I’m a 32 year-old guy that’s only just started writing. I do it for my own enjoyment and never plan on publishing
I try to write backgrounds/origins for my original characters from video games I play. Right now I’m working on a story about my GTA V Online character that is a in a biker gang. In the past I’ve tried to do the same for RDR2 Online and Sea of Thieves
I just really enjoy creating my own stories for them but as said before I’m a complete beginner so any help would be great

    Greetings & salutations, mortals!
You can call me Ben, short for my screen name BenevelentDemons. 57, I identify as a lesbian trapped in a man's body. Being able to pee standing up is kinda cool, I guess?
I write bad poetry, twisted lyrics karaoke, true tales of some of my experiences and adventures, and a bit of fiction for shits and giggles. Once I wrote a 6 chapter novella of erotica, got decent reviews & likes on a site that goes for that kinda thing. Got that out of my system anyway.

Someday I might try stand-up comedy if I happen to hear of an Open Mic Night nearby. I got some material.

Right now I'm writing a novel(?) about a drunken supervillain named Heinous Anus, the power of change, and redemption from villain to reluctant hero.

Quite an interesting theory of thought.
I'm a 33 year old female Caucasian writer from the US. I've written a little of everything but I admit I'm an amateur when it comes to full novels as of right now. I'm wetting my toes with the medium with Detective thrillers. I long to bring back the days of the brimmed hat and the long jacket, just buttoning to the left. I write a female crime solving MC. A Miss Marple no longer bound by social conventions if you will. Though I do my best to avoid comparison with Christie in my characters, I'm a big fan, so I have read all her work. I don't want it to bleed into my own writing, if you'll forgive the pun.

I too enjoy noir and hardboiled detective fiction, from Agatha Christie to Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and James Hadley.

Welcome, Shelin20! Every author and budding author is influenced by what came before them, so there's no need to worry. :)

If you'd like to bring back the brimmed hat and long coat, why not? It's a conscious fashion choice, influenced by the 1930s to 1950s (especially thanks to Hollywood), that I've adapted IRL to the modern day, using modern materials. Obviously I can only wear it in winter, but why not? ;)

I think all of my winter wear is very 1940s inspired as well actually. Most of my wardrobe looks more like it's come from the 1920s-1980s than it does modern honestly. I've never found that I liked modern clothing other than yoga pants haha.
I have always loved Agatha but I found myself so irritated by the constructs of the time, I appreciated that she included the realism of the discrimination that Poirot and Miss Marple would have dealt with but it always frustrates me. I want to have an MC that can be the mystery solving, heart stealer unbound by those conventions that were at the time current. She won't be excluded from conversations about bodies just because she's a woman, because it's no longer 1945. I still plan to accurately describe the way the world is of course, but an update will be lovely, in my opinion.

Hmm ... Monsieur Poirot is always ze mystery solver. Come, Hastings! Let us employ our little grey cells! :) But yes, he isn't a heart-stealer. (His heart is stolen, though -- briefly -- by Countess Vera Rossakoff). On the other hand, he has a very disarming, charming way that allows other people to confide in him, even if they're suspicious at first. As he says, "Ah, confide in Papa Poirot, mademoiselle" -- and people, male or female, do.

I haven't read much of Miss Marple, but from what I understand, she has a way of listening in on conversations without people noticing her much -- and she is also very shrewd. Is that right?

I agree that Agatha Christie's books are old-fashioned by today's standards, but then, consider that her first book -- The Mysterious Affair at Styles -- was written in the early 1920s, i.e. over 100 years ago. Consider, also, that Agatha is a master storyteller, adept at misleading the reader and planting red herrings. (When I first read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, I was never able to guess the murderer until the end).

Christie also uses poisons in many of her stories, which makes sense because she trained as a nurse and worked in a hospital dispensary during World War I. So she knows what she's talking about.

Finally, after her divorce from the overbearing Archibald Christie in 1928 and her marriage to the archaeologist Max Mallowan in 1930, she was able to travel the world and see what used to be called "foreign parts". So many of her best books come from this period: Murder on the Orient Express, Death in the Clouds, Death on the Nile, Appointment with Death, etc.

Morning. I've been writing short stories off and on since about 2002, probably got about 200+ of them floating around on various places over the years. I started to write again about 18 months ago after a 10 year battle with writer's block. Primarily, I deal with noir/crime based stuff, but also have a tendency to drift into Lovecraftian fiction as well. Have previously been published in a few anthologies as well.

So, what exactly is the etiquette here? Do you just start a thread here and post new chapters to it if you are posting a connected series of short stories? Or is it one post per entry??? :)

I'm a 37-year-old male who is a lead developer in the financial services industry by day and a writer by evening/early morning. I've written primarily about technology trends; however, I've recently started working on a memoir. Improving my creative writing skills is a pursuit I'm interested in and eager to learn more about. My favorite authors are Salman Rushdie and Truman Capote.

Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament by Joshua Bowen
Hello. I'm a retired non-binary neurotic person who writes for therapy. In all my fictional worlds, which span from historical and current to futuristic sci-fi, all of my protagonists have non-heteronormative sexuality. They say write what you know, so I do. I especially like the power dynamic reversal of Omega Verse stories and vampire-human power imbalances. I suppose my stories could be tagged as fantasy, romance, erotica (or smut), sci-fi, adventure, or horror. While some of my stories have power imbalances, they don't fall into the Dom/Sub subgenera.

I have little discipline for my creativity; I just let it flow. I do cleanup work when my muse (or daemon) stops inspiring me. I have completed several of my stories, but most are still unfolding. I haven't published yet because I don't know how, and I'm not sure the stories are ready. I'm a terrible writer, but I like my creative ideas.

    First post.

I'm a 39-year-old woman who has always been all over the place with my writing and writing interests. As a child, I mainly wrote songs and, occasionally, short stories. As a teenager, I was really into writing poetry, journalistic articles (worked for the school paper my last few years of high school), and even wrote around 25 episodes of this TV drama I'd made up. In college, I continued some of the poetry, majored in journalism, and regularly wrote opinion pieces for the school paper, but this stretch was also made up of bunch of novels I started but never finished, as well as a TON of personal blogging. After college....was when things started to slow down. A little poetry here, an even weaker attempt than before at a novel there. I think this is when a lot of my creativity, time, attention, and focus shifted to...(I'm ashamed to admit it)...social media...and all other things Internet. Probably most of my writing in my 20s was on social media, including some pretty extensive posts. Oh, and text messages to friends and family (cue their horror stories!!).

I've been trying for YEARS to get back to my younger-life writing flow. It's been a series of periodic, random start-stops-start-stops...but here we are...again.

As for genres, I've mostly been inclined towards fiction, with a lean most towards drama and science fiction. In the last few years, I have picked up greater interest in nonfiction, both from an increased interest in reading it and also feeling more and more like I have something unique to offer in writing.

For many, many years, I admittedly was very quite adversed to writing short stories, believing they were an "easy out", that I could "do better" than that (ignorant, I know) and feeling determined to complete at least one good novel -- ideally, multiple. In the last year or so, though, I've gained a much greater appreciation and respect for them -- especially as someone who tends to struggle to be quick and concise in my communication (can you tell? :-D). The idea of doing that and still managing to tell a captivating story really speaks to me. And then being able to tell so many different stories -- in many different genres -- more quickly, versus if always in novel form. And finally, there's my attention span -- I've lately began to wonder if short stories might be better for me just so I can finally complete something!! while in the early momentum of inspiration, versus trying to stretch that out for a full book, which is why I think so many of mine have ended up incomplete.

I've also had a strong interest in writing children's books.

And there you have it. My whole life as a (aspiring?) writer :)

I'm a 26 year old male who loves to read and write anything sci-fi, especially dystopian sci-fi. Dark psychological themes also appeal to me. I love to incorporate emerging technologies in my work, and am drawn to concepts or stories with mind control and inter-dimensional warfare in particular.

    Deer Season by Erin Flanagan
My name's Dylan. I'm a 27 year old, bisexual, white male from Ohio. I have a BFA in creative writing and I like to write literary, speculative fiction, and horror. I constantly feel like I'm still in a discovery phase of learning not only who I am, but what I like to write, and what shape my authorial voice will eventually take. I pull inspiration from movies and television most often. My idols include Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, Jordan Peele, Vince Gilligan, Mike Flanagan, Junot Diaz, Ari Aster, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven (but I'm gathering more and more idols every day).

I hope to one day make a living by writing, but I often get in my own way. I don't write nearly as often as I should or could because I'm convinced I'm no good and that no one will want to read what I've written (and that I'm being egotistical as to think what I write is worth someone's time), despite all of the evidence I've been given to the contrary. So lately I've been forcing myself to push through the self-doubt and produce in spite of my fear. I've been steadily becoming more productive and gaining confidence, too.

It's a battle, one that I hope to eventually win.
